Eight athletes finished in the top five of their events over the weekend.

NORMAL, ILL.- Western Illinois track and field concluded its third meet of the outdoor season with the Redbird Challenge, hosted by Illinois State University. Western Illinois took part in the two-day meet from Friday (April 15) through Saturday (April 16). The men's and women's teams both took seventh overall. Fans can view the full results here.

"We had some tough weather conditions this weekend, but the team did a great job competing despite the adverse elements," said Head Coach Trey Brokaw.

Paulina Wuestefeld narrowly missed out on her second straight first-place finish in the 1500m but still took second with a time of 4:39.93. Maleigha Huston also competed in the 1500m, taking 10th overall with a time of 4:49.08. Huston also took top 10 in the 800m, placing sixth with a time of 2:17.91. Madison Trevena took second place in the 5000m for the Leathernecks with a time of 17:57.57.

"Both Madison and Paulina lost their races by less than a second. I've been so proud of the way Paulina has raced more aggressive this outdoor season," said Trey Brokaw. "It will be fun to see how her senior year ends. On the contrary, Maddie is one of the most competitive, aggressive distance runners I've ever coached. She's dropped over three minutes off her 5k time since high school last year. Both girls are on the cusp on landing on the top-10 lists for WIU track & field."

In the field events, Tyronay Taylor led WIU in the long jump with a distance of 5.4m (17' 8.74") to finish third overall. In the hammer throw, Morgan Reed and Jasmine Stokes both placed in the top 10. Reed took fifth overall with a new personal best of 49.16m (161' 3.48"). Stokes finished right behind Reed at sixth with a distance of 49m (160' 9.12").

"Our hammer throwers got the competition started off right," said Trey Brokaw. "Morgan Reed threw a monster three meter personal best to lead the group. I was really proud of the way our long jumpers competed with Cooper Cox and Tyronay Taylor both placing top-3. The big tailwinds made it tough to stay on the board, but they found a way."

The men's side also saw success in both track and field events in Normal. Logan Lommel placed second in the 3000 steeplechase with a time of 9:46.11. The men's team put a majority of their runners in the 400m, where Ackeen Colley led the way. Colley ended with a time of 48.54 seconds to take fourth place. Lucas Hofer took seventh overall with a time of 48.97 seconds. Olin Ortiz also took home a top-five finish, placing fifth in the 5000m with a time of 15:32.33.

"Logan ran in his first ever 3000 steeplechase race. With his soccer background, he's a natural over the barriers and water pit," said Trey Brokaw. I can't wait to see him try the event again in a few weeks."

Cooper Cox had a career day in the long jump for Western Illinois, setting a new personal best at 6.67m (21' 10.56").

Western Illinois track and field will be back in action on Saturday (April 23) for the Musco Twilight Invitational, hosted by the University of Iowa.
