Baseball Drops Both Games Of Saturday Doubleheader

The Leathernecks will shift their focus to SIUE on Tuesday.

MACOMB, ILL.- Western Illinois Baseball (2-10, 4-28) lost both matchups in its doubleheader to the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles (7-2, 21-12) on Saturday, April 16. In game one, Oral Roberts used a big first inning for a 12-0 victory in seven innings. Western Illinois battled tough in game two, but the Golden Eagles bullpen held strong to earn ORU a 4-3 win.

Game One: Oral Roberts 12, Western Illinois 0

Oral Roberts managed to find the gaps in Western Illinois' defense in the first inning, starting off Saturday's action with four straight hits. A throwing error by Western Illinois brought in the first two Golden Eagles runs of the contest. Another error by WIU later in the inning scored another run to give Oral Roberts a 3-0 lead. ORU used a pair of RBI singles and a sacrifice bunt to drive in three more runs to take a 6-0 lead after the first inning.

A wild pitch in the second inning and a sacrifice fly in the third scored two more runs for Oral Roberts, giving them an 8-0 lead after three.

Oral Roberts led the fifth inning off with a pair of doubles and a single to score their ninth run of the contest. A passed ball surrendered by Western Illinois allowed another runner to come home to give the Golden Eagles a ten-run advantage. Oral Roberts used a single to center to score their third run of the inning to take an 11-0 lead. ORU took a 12-0 lead in the top of the seventh on a solo home run to right.

Nick Mitchell got on with a single in Western Illinois' first at-bat, but Oral Roberts retired 15 straight Leathernecks after the leadoff single. A single from Jack Sievers in the sixth would be WIU's only other hit of the game.

Jake Armstrong had a solid outing out of the bullpen, going 2.2 innings, allowing one run, one hit, and striking out four.

Game Two: Oral Roberts 4, Western Illinois 3

Western Illinois started game two on a much better note, but Oral Roberts still managed to strike first. A leadoff walk and single gave the Golden Eagles a pair of baserunners, and a wild pitch advanced them to second and third with no outs. A sacrifice fly brought in the first run of the second matchup to give Oral Roberts an early lead. Brian Raymond managed to regroup and strike out the next two batters to get out of the jam.

The momentum from Raymond carried over in the bottom of the second, providing WIU with two runs. David Olejnik drew a two-out walk and then scored on a crazy play. Jack Sievers singled to left, allowing Olejnik to advance to third. The umpires then called interference on Oral Roberts during the play, allowing Olejnik to score to tie the game. Derek Botaletto brought in Sievers with a single to give the Leathernecks a 2-1 lead.

Raymond put down Oral Roberts 1-2-3 in the third, and Western Illinois looked to have another two-out rally going in the bottom half of the inning. Dillon Sears drew a two-out walk and advanced to third on a double from Kory Olsen. Oral Roberts managed to get out of the inning with a strikeout to keep the deficit at one.

The Golden Eagles put runners on first and second to begin the fourth, and a fielding error by Western Illinois scored a run to tie the game at 2-2. Oral Roberts took the lead later in the inning on a sacrifice fly. Oral Roberts loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the sixth, and although WIU got a double play, a runner still crossed home plate to give the Golden Eagles a 4-2 lead.

Oral Roberts went to the bullpen in the bottom of the sixth, and Western Illinois jumped on the new arm. A single from Olsen began the inning, and Adam Juran reached on an error to give WIU two baserunners. A sacrifice bunt from Toby Allred advanced them to second and third. Chase VanDerGinst drew a walk to load the bases, and Botaletto drew another walk to score Olsen and get Western Illinois back within a run. However, a strikeout ended the inning to keep Oral Roberts in the lead.

Although WIU's pitching staff kept Oral Roberts off the board the remainder of the game, Western Illinois couldn't produce a big hit in their final three innings of offense and fell by a lone run in game two.

Kory Olsen hit his fifth double of the season in game two, finishing with a pair of hits and a run scored. Derek Botaletto finished 1-3 with a pair of RBIs for this third multi-RBI game of the season.

Both Brian Raymond and Jack Carberry were solid on the mound in the second contest. Raymond allowed just one earned run, three hits, and struck out two in five innings. Carberry pitched the final four, allowing one run, three hits, and striking out two.

Western Illinois is back in action for a single matchup with Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on Tuesday (April 19). First pitch against the Cougars is scheduled for 3 p.m. The Leatherneck offense will be looking forward to the matchup. In the contest versus the Cougars earlier in the season, the Leathernecks scored a season-high 18 runs to win 18-11.
