Sixth Inning Costs Leathernecks Versus Cougars

Western Illinois allowed five runs in the sixth in Tuesday's loss to SIUE.

MACOMB, ILL.- Western Illinois baseball (4-29) led early in its Tuesday matchup against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (15-18), but the Cougars managed to take the matchup by a final score of 13-5. WIU led 3-2 after five innings, but a five-run sixth inning proved to be the difference-maker to help SIUE take the season's second contest between the two clubs.

The Leathernecks struck first in the bottom of the second, getting things started with a walk and hit by pitch to put a pair on first and second. Jackson Hugus laid down a sacrifice bunt, and the throw from SIUE's third baseman went over the first baseman's head, allowing Kory Olsen to score to put WIU on the board. CJ Richmond brought in Gage Cruz on a fielder's choice during the next at-bat, giving the Leathernecks a 2-0 lead.

Kyle Rosenfeld retired the first two hitters in the top of the third to make it eight straight, but a two-out triple by the Cougars gave them their first baserunner. SIUE then dropped a bloop hit down the right-field line that was just out of reach for Gage Cruz to get the Cougars on the board.

The Cougars loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the fifth, forcing the Leathernecks to bring in Jack Bell. Bell struck out the first batter he faced and then got a groundout to second for the second out. However, a run did manage to score on the groundout to tie the game at 2-2. Bell got out of the inning with a flyout to center to keep the game tied. Western Illinois took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth on a groundout from Olsen to score Nick Mitchell, putting WIU up 3-2.

A pair of two-out walks allowed SIUE to load the bases in the top of the sixth, and a wild pitch brought the tying run home. A single during the Cougars' next at-bat brought in two baserunners, giving SIUE a 5-3 lead. SIUE hit another single later in the inning, scoring two more runs to go ahead 7-3. Western Illinois loaded the bases themselves in the bottom half of the sixth but couldn't answer with any runs of their own.

Western Illinois surrendered a pair of walks to begin the seventh, and a three-run home run followed to allow the Cougars to take a 10-3 lead. Matt Santarelli got a run back for WIU in the bottom of the seventh on a single to right-center. Jack Sievers also drove in a run in the seventh with a sacrifice fly to trim the deficit to five. SIUE managed to keep control with a pair of runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to win Tuesday's contest.

Kyle Rosenfeld made his first career start in the loss, pitching three innings, allowing one run, two hits, and striking out four. Jack Sievers finished perfect at the plate, going 2-2 with a walk and an RBI. Matt Santarelli finished 1-2 and drove in his seventh RBI of the season.

Western Illinois continues its home stretch this weekend with a three-game series versus the Omaha Mavericks. The Leathernecks begin the series on Friday (April 22) at 3 p.m.
