Late Rally Not Enough Versus Charlotte

A go-ahead run in the eighth helped give the 49ers the series-opening win.

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Western Illinois baseball (1-7) fell in the series opener to the Charlotte 49ers (5-4) by a final score of 4-3. Western Illinois scored three straight runs to tie the game up in the seventh, but Charlotte regrouped to take the lead late and hold on for the victory.

The 49ers took the lead in their first inning of work by capitalizing on early struggles from Jack Carberry. A pair of walks and a single loaded the bases, and then a hit by pitch brought in the first run of the ball game. A two-run home run by Charlotte in the fourth gave them a 3-0 lead.

Western Illinois managed just two hits through the first five innings but took advantage of Charlotte's starter's fatigue in the sixth. Toby Allred led the inning off with a single up the middle, and back-to-back walks from Adam Juran and Dillon Sears loaded the bases with no outs. That set up Jack Sievers, who put WIU on the board with a sacrifice fly to right to make the score 3-1.

The Leathernecks went back on offense in the top of the seventh and got going right away. Gage Cruz pinched hit for Diego Munoz and delivered in his lone at-bat with a single to center. Sam Maddox took over for Cruz on the bases and stole second to get a runner in scoring position. After a hit by pitch and a single from Kory Olsen, Western Illinois loaded the bases again to put pressure on Charlotte. Toby Allred got WIU back within a run on a single down the left-field line to make it a 3-2 game. Olsen tied things up later in the inning by scoring on a wild pitch.

Charlotte opted to use a pinch hitter in the bottom of the eighth, and it paid off by delivering a leadoff double. Another double two batters later easily scored the go-ahead run, allowing the 49ers to take a 4-3 lead.

Jack Bell took over at that point and came into a jam with runners on second and third with only one out. Bell wasn't fazed, though, and used a strikeout and groundout to get the Leathernecks out of the jam just down one.

Olsen did get a one-out single in the ninth, but two strikeouts officially closed the deal for Charlotte in the opening matchup.

Kory Olsen and Toby Allred led the offense in Friday's matchup. Olsen went 2-5 with a run scored, extending his hitting streak to eight games. The two-hit game gives Olsen his fourth multi-hit game of the season. Allred also totaled a pair of singles in four at-bats, with an RBI, run scored, and a walk. The RBI gives Allred his team-leading eighth of the season.

The series resumes tomorrow for game two at 2 p.m. CT.
