The 100th Career Win

The Leathernecks battled a stiff opponent and intense outdoor elements en route to Coach Hyden's 100th career win.

Box Score MACOMB, Ill. | All eyes were on Paige Grice, and the first-year delivered a  4-6, 6-1, 6-4 decision to help earn the Western Illinois women's tennis a 4-3 victory over Quincy on Tuesday (March 29). The decision also marked Shawn Hyden's 100th career head coaching win, which included previous successes at Earlham College and Acadia University.

"I'm so proud of the team," said Hyden. "Today was a match where the conditions were horrible. It was cold, and it was windy. They found a way to battle the elements and their opponents to gut out a win. It doesn't have to be pretty. It's about finding a way to win no matter what, and today they sure did that!"

Western claimed the doubles point earlier in the afternoon when its No. 2 (Aina Cortina-Pou and Lucky Kancherla) and No. 3 (Grice and Agatha Carbonell) pairs disposed of their opponents, 6-3 and 6-1. The latter victories occurred in the No. 4 through No. 6 singles positions: Grice, Kancherla (6-2, 6-0), and Maria Rybka (6-1, 6-1).

Next up, the Leathernecks are off to Denver Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
