Track and Field Ends With Multiple Top Five Finishes AT ESU Relays

Western Illinois had a great weekend from multiple athletes in its outdoor season opener.

EMPORIA, KAN.- Western Illinois track and field concluded its first meet of the outdoor season over the weekend, competing in the Emporia State Relays, hosted by Emporia State University. Fans can view full results and team rankings here.
 
"It was a classic first competition of the season with performances all over the place a bit," said Head Coach Trey Brokaw. "Most athletes doubled or tripled in events as preparation for the outdoor conference championships. We have a lot more work to do but this was a solid start to the season."
 
Paulina Wuestefeld had a pair of terrific finishes in the 1500m and 5000m to lead the women's team. Wuestefeld placed fourth in the 1500m (4:40.29), and third in the 5000m. Wuestefeld finished with a new personal best in the 5000m at 17:59.17.
 
Tyronay Taylor represented WIU great in the triple jump, placing fourth overall at 11.11m. Morgan Reed placed in the top ten in both the shot put and hammer throws. She took seventh in shot put (12.51m) and eighth in hammer throw (45.74m).
 
Maleigha Huston made her much anticipated outdoor collegiate debut and started her outdoor career off with placing 10th in the 1500m and eleventh in the 800m. Freshman Madison Trevena took seventh in the 5000m (18:24.34) in her first collegiate outdoor meet.
 
Briza Dure made her outdoor debut in the U.S. and showed that she will be a force to be reckoned with. Dure took 14th in the 100m (12.39 seconds) and 10th in the 200m (25.29 seconds).
 
For the men's team, it was Lucas Hofer and Richard Brown putting on a show in the 800m. Hofer took third overall at 1:51.47, while Brown finished just behind him in fourth with a time of 1:52.78.
 
However, the duo wasn't the only Leathernecks to place in the top five in their event. In the 1500m, WIU saw a third place finish from Logan Lommel (3:56.34) and a fourth place finish from Ackeen Colley (3:56.73).
 
The men's 4x400 relay team of Hofer, Lommel, Brown, and Colley took fifth place out of 26 teams with a time of 3:17.24.
 
Western Illinois will be back competing next Friday (April 1) and Saturday (April 2) in the Joey Haines Invitational in Cape Girardeau, Mo., hosted by Southeast Missouri State University.
