Baseball travels to SIUE For Single Game Matchup

Western Illinois baseball readies for another in-state battle with the Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville Cougars on Wednesday (March 16) at 4 p.m. CT.
 
Headlines
  • Western Illinois competed hard in their three-game series at Butler, but the Bulldogs managed to take all three games. Butler came back from an early 5-0 deficit take game one 8-5. In game two, they jumped ahead early for a 9-5 win. Game three was tied at 3-3, but Butler used a three-run eighth to win the finale 6-3. The losses push Western Illinois' losing streak to 12 games.
  • Senior Kory Olsen produced another great series at the plate versus Butler, going 4-12 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Olsen has crossed homeplate in four straight games for the Leathernecks and has at least one hit in 13 of his 14 games. 
  • Western Illinois' bullpen was a major bright spot in game two, combining for one of the best outings of the season. The squad of Johnny Beck, Jacob Greenan, Jake Armstrong, and Will Jaynes pitched five innings, allowed no runs, just one hit, no walks, and struck out four.
  • Jackson Hugus started behind the plate in game two of the series and produced both offensively and defensively. The freshman went 2-4 with a double, and a run scored on offense and led the defense with nine putouts.
  • Brian Raymond got the start in game three for WIU and had his best outing of the season. The left-hander pitched a season-high five innings, allowed one run, five hits, two walks, and struck out one.
  • Western Illinois continues its long history against SIUE, playing the first of two games this season against the Cougars. The series dates back to 1977, and Wednesday's contest will be the 59th meeting all-time. Western Illinois leads the all-time series 30-28 and won last season's lone contest in Edwardsville 6-5.
 Scouting the Opposition | SIUE comes in with a 9-5 overall record and has won seven of their past eight games. The Cougars started off 2-4 but used a four-game series sweep over Western Michigan to gain momentum. They're coming off a three-game sweep over Oakland. The combo of Josh Ohl and Brett Johnson has been the story for SIUE's offense to this point. The duo has combined for 41 hits, seven doubles, three triples, 14 home runs, and 25 RBIs.
