Ackeen Colley Named Summit League Championships Most Outstanding Performer

| By:

Colley earns the honor for the second straight indoor season after his fantastic 800m performance.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.- Ackeen Colley's historical indoor track and field season has added another reward. Colley was named the Summit League Indoor Championships Men's Most Outstanding Performer; the Summit League announced Tuesday (March 1).

"Ackeen exemplifies what it means to be a student-athlete. Despite being enrolled in one of the most grueling academic programs at Western Illinois University, he has been able to achieve great success throughout his collegiate running career," said Head Coach Trey Brokaw. "This indoor season was no exception. Twice a week he puts in a 12-hour shift at the hospital in Springfield. Many times, he'll stay up late in the night studying for his nursing exams. Academics should come first though, and for that reason Ackeen will make a great nurse someday. It's been a long, difficult road for him as a student-athlete, but he's closing in on the finish line. We look forward to seeing what Ackeen can accomplish in his final outdoor season this spring."

Colley began the Championships by breaking his own record in the 800m during the preliminaries with a time of 1:48.41 to advance to the finals the next day. The finals were no issue for Colley, who took first place for the second straight year with a time of 1:48.83. He is the first student-athlete to earn back-to-back Most Outstanding Performer of the Championship honors.

Colley also helped Western Illinois take home another medal in the DMR event. Competing in the 1200m, Colley helped the Leathernecks take third place with a time of 10:10.85. The time stands as the eighth fastest in program history. Colley also competed in the 4x400 relay for WIU, which took fourth place.

Western Illinois also had three other athletes receive all-league accolades from the championships. Richard Brown was named all-league in the 800m for taking third place and in the DMR. Lucas Hofer and Isaiah Mooreman were named all-league in the DMR.
