Colley Ranked Top-20 In NCAA With New School Record

Western Illinois concluded its regular season with more milestones from multiple athletes.

SOUTH BEND, IND.- Western Illinois track and field's indoor regular season ended on Saturday (Feb. 19) with the Alex Wilson Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame. The Leathernecks once again competed alongside some of the best athletes and teams in the nation and showed they could compete with them. Full results from the Alex Wilson Invitational can be viewed here.

"We had many student-athletes achieve lifetime personal bests in their events at Notre Dame," said head coach Trey Brokaw. "I feel like we're more than ready for the Summit League Championships next week."

Ackeen Colley was the story in South Bend with a new personal and school record in the 800m. Colley set a new mark at 1:47.98 to take third place overall, and it's the second week in a row that Colley broke his 800m time.

"1:47.98 is so impressive considering his academic workload," said Trey Brokaw. "His time currently has him ranked 20th in the nation. A half second faster and he would be ranked 10th. It is so easy to make up a half second in the 800 meters. He will get one more chance at hitting a qualifying (top-16) mark at the Summit League Championships next week."

Colley wasn't the only Leatherneck to compete in the 800m on Saturday, with Logan Lommel and Isaiah Mooreman competing alongside Colley. Lommel ran in the 800m for the first time since last year's Summit League Championships and set a new personal best at 1:54.71. Mooreman also set a new personal at 1:57.92.

Lucas Hofer took first place in his section and 12th overall in the 400m as WIU's lone competitor in the event.

Maleigha Huston had a great performance in the women's mile event, winning her section and placing seventh overall with a new personal record at 5:01.69. Her time puts her ninth all-time in school history.

"It's been a great freshman year for her," said Trey Brokaw. "She now sits sixth in the 800, seventh in the 1000, and ninth in the mile all-time in school history."

Huston also competed in the women's 4x400 relay alongside Briza Dure, Zwandi Harrison, and Kristina Petrou. The squad just missed out on finishing top-10 all-time in school history but still took second in the event with a time of 4:01.41.

"We wanted to put a fast relay out there for conference seeding purposes. The top-five teams are in the fast section at conference, and we were ranked eighth coming into the weekend," said Trey Brokaw. "Zwandi Harrison gave us a great lead off leg as she continues to run more confidently. New mid-year transfer, Briza Duré, had the fastest split running 57 seconds."

Kristina Petrou also competed in the 800m and set a new personal best.

Western Illinois will now focus its attention on the Summit League Championships next Friday (Feb. 25) through Saturday (Feb. 26) in Grand Forks, N.D.
