Ackeen Colley Named Summit League Indoor Track and Field Athlete Of The Week

| By:

Colley takes home the weekly honor after an outstanding performance at the Music City Challenge.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.- The week keeps getting better for Ackeen Colley, who earned his first indoor Summit League Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week accolades, the Summit League announced Tuesday (Feb. 15). Colley is the first Leatherneck to be recognized this season.

"Ackeen has exemplified what it means to be a student-athlete in the Summit League. He's one of the most talented middle-distance runners in the country. He is also enrolled in the Western Illinois Nursing program, one of the top Nursing programs in the region," said Head Coach Trey Brokaw. "After transferring from Oklahoma, Ackeen had 56 students in his nursing class at WIU. As a senior this year, his class had dwindled down to 24 students. It's very rigorous, and Ackeen certainly has had to sacrifice in order to achieve his dream of becoming a nurse. Stress is stress regardless of where it's coming from, so we've had to make a lot of adjustments in training to keep him healthy and performing well."

"Ackeen is also a great teammate. Many times, he's the loudest at practice or at competitions when his teammates need encouragement," said Trey Brokaw. "It's been a joy to be a small part of his journey. After graduating in May, I'm confident Ackeen will be a tremendous representative of Western Illinois University and the Summit League; whether his next chapter is as a nurse or professional runner is yet to be determined."

Colley was one of two male athletes to receive the weekly award after his historic performance at the Indoor Music City Challenge. He once again showed why he's among the best runners in the nation with his 800m performance in Nashville. Colley set a new personal record and school record in the 800m with a time of 1:48.22 to place fifth overall and first in his section. His time currently ranks first in the Summit League and 23rd in the nation.
