WIU Women Complete Weekend Sweep

Fast start, strong finish paces Leathernecks.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — For the second straight game, the Western Illinois women got off to a big lead, lost it, then recovered and scored a win away from home, utilizing a strong fourth quarter to give the Leathernecks their second-straight win in North Dakota as WIU topped the Fighting Hawks 85-73 on Saturday in Grand Forks. The victory improves Western's Summit League record to 5-8 and 14-10 overall.

The Leathernecks had a hot start to the day, going 7-12 from three in the opening quarter and 10-22 from the field, grabbing a quick 27-7 lead after one. The WIU defense did the job early, holding UND to 2-14 from the field in the opening period, but in the second and third, the Fighting Hawk offense came to life, going 17-35 from the field and scoring 47 points in the middle two periods. North Dakota would take a 48-47 lead with 5:46 to go in the third but a Danni Nichols three would give WIU back the lead. North Dakota would tie the game again at 50, but a Mallory McDermott lay up gave Western a 58-54 lead at the end of three.

In the fourth UND got to within two points at 58-56, but an 8-0 run gave the Leathernecks a 66-56 lead with 5:22 left. From there, Western would keep North Dakota at a safe distance as free throws and defense led the way. The Leathernecks went 12-18 from the line in the final quarter, icing away the victory.

Elizabeth Lutz led the Leathernecks and just missed a triple double with 13 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Evan Zars would get the double-double for Western, scoring 13 points and grabbing a game-high 18 rebounds, also recording three blocks. Jada Thorpe led Western in scoring, finishing with 19 points. It was a balanced offensive attack as Danni Nichols added 11, Kennedy Flanagan scored 10 and Samantha Pryor and Mallory McDermott each added eight. The Leathernecks went 26-69 from the field (37.7 percent) while going 15-31 (48.4) from three.

Western continues its road trip on Monday, visiting Oral Roberts in a 4 p.m. tipoff.
