Leathernecks End Road Trip With Loss at ORU

Anna Deets scored 14, Leathernecks look to final home stand of the regular season this weekend.

TULSA, Okla. — It was a game of runs and Oral Roberts made the biggest ones, topping the Western Illinois women 93-74 on Monday at the Mabee Center in Tulsa. Western Illinois moves to 14-11 on the season (5-9 against Summit League opponents) with four games remaining in the regular season. 

The Leathernecks started the game in good shape, leading 6-5 on a Danni Nichols' basket 2:29 into the game, but ORU went on a 16-0 run to lead 21-6 with 4:01 to go in the first. Western Illinois responded, scoring 10 of the next 11 points to get to within 22-16 but the Golden Eagles answered right back, scoring the next seven to lead 29-16 early in the second quarter. After trailing by as many as 17 in the first half, the Leathernecks to cut the Golden Eagle lead to five, 60-55, with two minutes, 11 seconds to go in the third quarter, but Oral Roberts responded and built a 68-57 lead as the game entered its final period. In the fourth quarter, the Golden Eagles were rolling, pushing the advantage to 23 points, 88-65 with 4:33 to go and would hold on to win win 93-74.

Elizabeth Lutz led Western Illinois with 20 points, two rebounds, four assists and seven steals, while Jada Thorpe added 15 points  of her own. Anna Deets added 14 points and six rebounds, and Evan Zars finished with eight points, five rebounds, one steal and one block on 4-7 shooting from the field. As a team Western shot 27-60 (45 percent) from the field in the game, hitting 11-31 (35.5%) from three and grabbing 22 total rebounds (five offensive). The Leatherneck defense created 18 Golden Eagle turnovers.

Western Illinois is back at home for two games this week, hosting South Dakota State at 6 p.m. on Thursday (Feb. 17) and then host South Dakota in Western's senior day game on Saturday (Feb. 19) at 2 p.m.
