WIU WBB Falls at Home

The Leathernecks move to 14-12 on the season with three games remaining.

MACOMB, Ill. ­The Western Illinois University Fighting Leatherneck women's basketball team played on Thursday (Feb. 17), falling 54-84 to the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State at Western Hall. With the loss, Western moves to 14-12 on the season with three games remaining.
 
Western Illinois started the game slow, with the Jackrabbits opening up the game on a 17-4 run in the game's opening five minutes. After a media timeout Western Illinois would start to find its rhythm, utilizing an 8-0 run late in the first period to bring the game to within seven on an Anna Deets three-pointer. Western went cold again during the second quarter and trailed 41-25 heading into the halftime break. South Dakota State's defense would hold the Leathernecks to eight points in the third quarter, but Western responded to outscore the Jackrabbits 21-19 in the game's final ten minutes. Despite the resurgence, Western trailed 54-84 when the final buzzer sounded.
 
Evan Zars led the team in scoring with 12 points, while grabbing seven rebounds and shooting 6-10 from the field. Danni Nichols had an efficient 10 on 4-5 shooting, while Elizabeth Lutz finished with 10 points, three rebounds and four steals. Anna Deets also scored in double figures with ten points of her own, making 4-7 from the field and 2-5 from deep, while Jada Thorpe paired seven points with four assists and two steals. Alissa Dins scored two and added three boards in 17 minutes off the Leatherneck bench while Kennedy Flanagan grabbed a rebound and dished out one assist in ten minutes of play.
 
As a team Western Illinois shot 23-51 from the field (45.15), hitting seven shots from deep and grabbing 28 rebounds (six offensive). The Leathernecks scored 30 points in the paint, and were supported by 15 bench points. The Leatherneck defense generated 13 Jackrabbit turnovers, finishing the game with seven steals and two blocks.
 
Western Illinois is back in action on Saturday (Feb. 19), hosting the South Dakota Coyotes. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m., and the outgoing seniors will be honored pregame.
