Western Illinois ended with good placements in the John Gartland Invitational

Terre Haute, Ind.- Western Illinois track and field competed in their second indoor meet of the 2022 season, taking part in the John Gartland Invitational, hosted by Indiana State University. Full results from the meet can be found here.

"It was an interesting meet for the team this weekend. Performances were a little bit all over the place," said head coach Trey Brokaw. "We will certainly have to compete better if we plan to improve our standings as a team at the conference championships later this season."

Logan Lommel led the men's team by winning the mile event, but timing system malfunction prevented him from getting a verified time.

"It rarely happens and it's unfortunate for Logan because he ran a substantial personal best," said Trey Brokaw. "Logan ran confidently and competed very well. His future in the sport is a bright one."

In the 400m, the Leathernecks had three athletes place in the top five with Ackeen Colley taking second, Lucas Hofer taking third, and Richard Brown taking fourth.

The men's 4x400 relay team of Brown, Colley, Hofer, and Lommel took second, finishing just a tad over two seconds behind host Indiana State.

The women's team was highlighted once again by Maleigha Huston in the 800m. Huston was the top collegiate finisher and took second overall, finishing just behind her assistant coach Stephanie Brokaw.

"It is kind of interesting that between those two women, they have a combined 11 Illinois class 1A state titles," said Trey Brokaw. "Maleigha seems to be very confident in her ability and she has the talent to back it up. Like Logan, she should have a very bright future ahead of her in the sport."

The women's team saw four athletes finish in the top 15 in the mile event, with Huston leading the Leathernecks with a new personal record to take third overall. Not far behind Huston, Paulina Wuestefeld took fourth, Madison Trevena took sixth, and Mackenzie Goldring took 11th.

Western Illinois track and field won't be back in action until Feb 4., when they head back to the state of Indiana to take part in the Meyo Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame. The Meyo Invitational is one of the premier competitions in the country for track and field.
