Make it Five

Leatherneck women’s soccer won their fifth straight game against IUPUI on Sunday (Sept. 12).

MACOMB, ILL. – The Western Illinois University Fighting Leatherneck women's soccer team was back in action on Sunday (Sept. 12), defeating the IUPUI Jaguars 4-1 at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.

Fielding a highly experienced starting lineup that included seniors Amy Andrews and Bridget Schuler, it was IUPUI who made the first move in the 18th minute. After a long ball over the top from their goalkeeper, Maya Lacognato was able to finish and put the Jaguars ahead. That lead, however, did not last long.

In the 27th minute, Bridget Schuler played Amy Andrews in, who controlled the ball and finished at the far post with her right foot to even the score. It was Andrews' sixth goal of the season and her first of the game, and the half would finish in a deadlock at one each.

Once the second half started, it was all Western Illinois. After a scramble in the box, Carolina Gomes was able to finish and give the 'Necks a lead in the 64th minute. Soon after, Amy Andrews completed her brace, taking a Jenna Lundgren feed and finishing in the 77th minute to double the lead. Three minutes later Jenna Lundgren converted a penalty kick and Western took a 4-1 lead, which would hold until the final horn.

"The girls just didn't give up - they all work really well together and it's nice to see hard work finally paying off for some players," associate head coach Josée Primeau said after the game. "Jenna Lundgren works really hard so for her to get a goal was great, Natalie Nagle works super hard and then our forwards have taken care of business. Our back line kept everything in check, (Angie Knies), (Cassidy Grunewald) and (Lauryn Peters) all did their job."

In 90 minutes of play Western Illinois out shot IUPUI 16-7 (10-3 on goal), forcing six saves from the Jaguars' goalkeeper and taking six corners. The team drew 12 fouls and the combination of Isabel Navas Rodriguez and Megan Rasmussen made two saves on seven shots faced, while the team held 56% of the game's possession.

"I think the result just shows how hard the girls have been working. We come in day in and day out in training, we got the win on Friday which was well deserved, and then they knew that today was going to be a challenge," Primeau added. "IUPUI has always been athletic, they've given us a run for our money in the past and we just had to come out today and get a result at home."

The Leathernecks finished with two wins last season and now have more than doubled that total with the current streak. According to Primeau, these results have come down to the focus of the team.

"Ending last spring the way we did with two wins, the win and loss record didn't really mean that much to us," Primeau said. "At the end of the day, they wanted to be more competitive and be better as a team so the girls never lost sight of that. Throughout the summer and even showing up for preseason they all had the same goals in mind."

Leatherneck women's soccer hasn't won five-straight games since the 2012 season when they rattled off two long winning streaks. That team first won six-straight from Aug. 24 to Sept. 9, lost to Missouri State, then won five more in a row from Sept. 16 through Oct. 6. During the second streak, one of their victories came against none other than IUPUI.

After an off day tomorrow, Western Illinois women's soccer will prepare for their next matchup against Eastern Michigan. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 17) at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.
