Leathernecks Win Second-Straight Overtime Game

WIU women’s soccer has scored at least four goals in back-to-back games.

The Western Illinois women's soccer program was back in action on Sunday (Aug. 29), securing a 4-3 overtime victory against the Northern Iowa Panthers in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Freshman Rachel Balinao got the first start of her Leatherneck career, joining a lineup that featured regular starters like Isabel Navas Rodriguez, Amy Andrews and Natalie Nagle. In total, 15 players received time on the pitch.

Western got off to a quick start, with Bridget Schuler scoring in the 11th minute. After receiving a ball from Kayla Turner, Schuler placed a shot past the 'keeper to give WIU the lead. Northern Iowa quickly got back into the game, scoring seven minutes later in the 18th minute. They would add one more before the first 45 minutes were over, and the Leathernecks trailed 2-1 at half.

After a slow start to the second half, it was Western Illinois who got on the score sheet first in the second period of play. In the 70th minute, Bridget Schuler scored again and tied the game at two apiece. Seven minutes later, Andrews finished a Schuler pass to give Western a 3-2 lead. With the goal, Amy Andrews has now scored five goals in her last two appearances.

Northern Iowa would tie the game in the 86th minute, and the game would go to overtime. Once in overtime, Western Illinois took control and Maddie Hasken's 97th minute dagger would give the Leathernecks a 4-3 victory.

In 97 minutes of play Western had 15 shots (9 on goal), committing five fouls and taking two corners. Isabel Navas Rodriguez made five saves on 12 shots faced (eight on goal). Schuler's brace was her first multi-goal performance as a Leatherneck, and Maddie Hasken's overtime winner was the first of her collegiate career.

WIU women's soccer is set to play UIC in their next game, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 5) in Chicago, Ill.
