Women's Soccer Wins Third Straight Game

Bridget Schuler scored, now has three goals in her last two games.

Rockford, Ill. – The Western Illinois University women's soccer team won their third consecutive game on Sunday (Sept. 5), defeating the UIC Flames 1-0 at Wedgbury Stadium at MercyHealth Sportscore Two in Rockford, Ill. The game was originally scheduled to take place in Chicago but was moved due to construction.

The first half was a balanced affair, with the teams finishing closely in multiple statistical categories. WIU led the game in shots 7-5, corner kicks taken 4-3, and both teams were even with three shots on goal. Isabel Navas Rodriguez made three saves on the five shots she faced.

After a back and forth start to the second period, it was Western Illinois who finally broke the deadlock. In the 76th minute, Bridget Schuler  got on the end of an Amy Andrews header and placed a shot to the lower right hand corner to give Western the lead. Schuler scored two goals in the team's last game, giving her three goals in her last two appearances.

The Flames didn't manage a single shot the rest of the way, and Western Illinois held a one goal lead when the final horn sounded.

As a team, Western finished with 14 shots (six on goal), seven corner kicks taken and 14 fouls drawn. The defense drew four flames offsides, and Isabel Navas Rodriguez finished with five saves on 14 shots faced.

Navas Rodriguez, Cassidy Grunewald, Lauryn Peters, Natalie Nagle, Angie Knies and Kayla Turner all played the full 90 minutes, and today's game was Zoe Clarke's first start of the season. In total, 15 different players featured for the Leathernecks.

The team heads back on the road for their next game, a matchup with Valparaiso. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 10) at Brown Field in Valparaiso, Ind.
