Western Wins Overtime Thriller

With four goals scored in the game, Amy Andrews tied a school record.

Box Score MACOMB, ILL. – The Western Illinois women's soccer team was victorious on Thursday (Aug. 26), winning 4-3 against the Illinois State Redbirds at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.

Though the Redbirds scored the game's first goal in the 15th minute, it didn't take long for Western to respond. In the 23rd minute, Angie Knies played a long ball over the top and Amy Andrews chased it down, put it past the 'keeper, and tied the game at one. The first half finished locked up at one a piece.

The second half started similar to the first, but the game's urgency picked up in the waning minutes and goals were scored in quick succession. Andrews gave the 'Necks a lead in the 72nd minute off a Lauryn Peters assist, and Illinois State soon responded with a goal of their own in the 75th minute.

Two minutes later, in the 77th minute, Natalie Nagle played another ball over the top to Andrews, who composed herself and put a shot on net from a few yards outside the box. The high-arching shot landed right in front of the Redbird goalkeeper, who misplayed the ball, and it rolled in to give Western a 3-2 lead. Illinois State scored five minutes later, and the game was tied at 3-3 after 90 minutes.

It took less than two minutes of overtime play for Andrews to seal the deal. Kayla Turner found some space behind the Illinois State back line and played a lofted cross across the middle. Near the penalty spot was Andrews, who headed the ball in and won the game.

According to associate head coach Josée Primeau, it was the team's hard work throughout the game and week of practice that led to today's result.

"The girls worked really hard this week, and we knew that we had to come out and get a result," Primeau said. "We knew the heat was going to be a factor, but the girls worked so hard today and Amy killed it so I'm very happy."

In total, the Leathernecks out shot their opponents 22-19 (16-10 in the second half), finishing with nine corner kicks taken and six fouls committed. Isabel Navas Rodriguez continued her hot start to the season, finishing with six saves. Andrews' performance was one for the record books, as her four-goal outburst tied her with Rachel Lynde for most goals in a game in program history – a record that dates back over 20 years.

"She took care of business. We needed her to put some away and she did exactly that today," Primeau said of Andrews' performance. "We're very proud of her."

The team will head on the road for their next matchup, facing Northern Iowa on Sunday (Aug. 29). Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Cedar Falls.
