Medals Around Our ‘Necks

Amelia Peterson, Richard Brown, and Ackeen Colley will leave the Summit League Outdoor Championships with hardware.

VERMILLION, S.D. - The third and final day of the 2021 Summit League Outdoor Track & Field Championships presented by The U.S. Air Force Special Warfare was good for Western Illinois. So good, in fact, the Leathernecks medaled three times and narrowly missed the podium in another.

"We had another strong day today with several key performances to round out the weekend," said head coach Diane Wholey. "It has been an eventful year of competing. We were excited about getting back on the track to compete through the COVID concerns and weather those storms. I am very pleased with how well many of our student-athletes responded to those challenges and competed through the 2021 indoor and outdoor seasons."

Saturday (May 16) was full of pomp and circumstance for several Leathernecks including senior Amelia Peterson. She officially became a Western Illinois graduate earlier in the day before working for a second-place performance in the triple jump. She doubled down on silver medals at both the indoor and outdoor championship meets, and the latter came on a mark of 12.38 meters (40-07½).

Peterson wasn't the only Leatherneck to repeat success in the two Summit League meets - Ackeen Colley (1:51.75) and Richard Brown (1:52.50) also dominated the men's 800-meter run. Colley swept the indoor and outdoor championship titles while Brown came in at third for the second time.

The pair, along with Lucas Hofer and Peterson, await results from around the nation to determine if they will qualify for the NCAA West Preliminaries (May 27-29) in College Station, Texas. Three milliseconds separated the Leathernecks' men's 4x400 - Colley, Brown, Hofer, and Logan Lommel - from a 'Top 3' finish in the title event, but the foursome posted a season's best relay of 3:12.86.

"It was great to have Ackeen win again this weekend," said assistant coach Brandon Hazouri. "I know Richard is a little disappointed with third, but it's so important for him to keep getting that championship experience. Hofer ran a huge PR to make that final, and we're hoping he can sneak into the regional meet with those two guys. I was proud of the way Habibu battled in the men's 5K. It was a hot day, and he gutted out a PR and a great finish. We also had some women step out of their comfort zone and run some relays, so I thought that was great to see them do that for the team to help score some points."

No stranger to historical milestones -- as Hofer was added to the Leathernecks' all-time list in the 800 a day prior -- the Leathernecks also welcomed Habibu Moise to its record book. The freshman distance runner is now 10th all-time in the 5,000-meter run after posting a time of 15:05.70 in his finals race.
