Record Breakers

Ackeen Colley and Richard Brown broke the Leathernecks' 800-meter record.

OXFORD, Miss. - Two new names sit atop Western Illinois' all-time rankings in the men's 800-meter run, and they are Ackeen Colley and Richard Brown. The pair finished second and sixth in the event at the Joe Walker Invite Friday (April 9), but their times place first and second, respectively, in the Leathernecks' track and field record book.

Tony Taylor previously set the mark at 1:48.82 back in 1993, and Colley was the first to beat it with a time of 1:47.71. Brown finished his heat in 1:48.65, and Lucas Hofer, a little over a second shy of claiming a spot on the 'Top 10' list, finished his in 1:52.92.

Brown and Colley now hold the No. 1 and No. 2 positions in the event in WIU's indoor and outdoor rankings.

While the three mid-distance runners were at Ole Miss, the rest of the team took care of business at the EIU Big Blue Classic in Charleston, Ill.

Amelia Peterson matched her historic PR in the long jump (5.91 meters / 19'4.75"), which currently ties for seventh all-time. She finished second in her final in a field that featured 14 others but wasn't the only long jumper to make waves on the day.

Carlos Vincent placed third in his event for a new lifetime PR of 6.69 meters (21'11.50").

Eight Leathernecks posted finished in the 'Top 10' of their event at EIU: Peterson (second / LJ); Vincent (third / LJ); Morgan Reed (sixth / hammer); Jasmine Stokes (10th / hammer); Daija Range (seventh / shot put); Carrissa Tinsley (eighth / shot put); Morgan Reed (10th / shot put); and Kalen Samelton (10th / discus).

"Overall, I'm very pleased with the results," said head coach Diane Wholey. "We're excited to have another opportunity to compete outdoors. After missing the last outdoor season, every chance we get to complete outdoors is a great opportunity. It was a very windy meet and that posed a few challenges, but many of our kids handled the adversity well. All their hard work in practice paid off."

Next weekend, the Leathernecks are off to Indiana State for the Gibson Invitational April 16-17.
