Colley Places Top Three at Drake Relays

Ackeen Colley and Richard Brown wrapped the Leathernecks’ appearance in the Drake Relays.

DES MOINES, Iowa - With one race on the day, Ackeen Colley and Richard Brown concluded the Western Illinois track and field team's appearance in the Drake Relays Saturday (April 24).

The 1-2-3 positions of the 800-meter run raced in one after the other, and Colley crossed the finish line in third. Leonel Perez of Iowa State set the time to beat in 1:50.79 and was followed by Eastern Illinois' Adam Swanson (1:51.18) and Colley (1:51.22).

Brown was one of two freshmen in the final and placed 10th in 1:53.15.

"It was a great experience for those guys to get in a championship race like that," said assistant coach Brandon Hazouri. "Having such a big field, they could have executed the first 400 meters a lot better to put themselves in a position to win. They both closed great but unfortunately were too far back when it counted. After four straight weeks of racing, it will be good to stay home a couple weekends and get ready for the championship season."

"I think these athletes have done a tremendous job competing and have represented Western so well throughout the semester. They are both great assets for our program as is Coach Hazouri," added head coach Diane Wholey

The Leathernecks will now turn their focus to the Summit League Outdoor Championships presented by the U.S Air Force Special Warfare. The meet will take place May 13-15 at the Lillibridge Track Complex and Gottsleben Field in Vermillion, S.D.
