The Leathernecks will leave Iowa with a school record and an event win.

DES MOINES & INDIANOLA, Iowa - School records and first-place performances have become the norm for the Western Illinois track and field program, and its appearance at the Drake Relays Friday (April 23) was no different.

The Leathernecks will leave the state of Iowa with Amelia Peterson's win in the triple jump and  Lucas Hofer, Richard Brown, Logan Lommel, and Ackeen Colley's record-setting time in the 4x800 relay.

She was the first Leatherneck to make noise at the meet, where back-to-back jumps of 12.49 meters (40-11.75) on her second and third attempts became the mark to beat. Peterson has now placed either first or second in all six triple jump events she's competed in this outdoor season. Western's buzz continued when its 4x8 took to Drake Stadium to take down a record that went unscathed for 41 years. Their time of 7:22.80 bested the previous mark by nearly three seconds (7:26.11).

"Western Illinois had an eventful day at the 2021 Drake Relays today," said head coach Diane Wholey. "The Drake Relays event staff put several protocols in place to keep everyone COVID safe, but all in all, it was a great day for us.

"Amelia's jump was fairly close to her current PR. With her work ethic and talent, I know she will continue to improve. She was also ninth in the women's University division of the long jump with a mark of 5.49 meters. Lucas, Richard, Logan, and Ackeen combined their efforts to create a great performance for themselves and our program."

The rest of the team competed at Simpson College's Kip Janvrin Open and were also quite successful. Western's throwers boasted the only "Top 10" acts at the meet, led by Kalen Samelton's fourth-place finish in the discus (43.97m / 144-03). Jasmine Stokes claimed sixth in the hammer (46.02m / 151-00), while Carrissa Tinsley went eighth in the shot put (11.55m / 37-10.75).

Colley and Brown will run the 800-meter run Saturday to conclude Western's weekend. The Summit League Outdoor Track & Field Championship will take place May 13-15 in Vermillion, S.D.
