Several Bright Spots at the Gibson Invitational

The Leathernecks put on a show on day two of the meet, starred by a first-place performance from the men’s 4x400 relay.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The men's 4x400 relay was the star of the day for the Western Illinois track and field program, but there were several other bright spots at the Indiana State Gibson Invitational. The Leathernecks wrapped their appearance in the meet Saturday (April 17) with an event win and three other 'Top 5' finishes.

Lucas Hofer, Ackeen Colley, Richard Brown, and Briley Roper joined forces for the fastest 4x4 inside the Gibson Track & Field Complex, and it was also Western's best of the season (3:15.67).

"We are grateful for another meet with favorable weather. Many of our athletes took advantage of that and turned in strong performances,  several recorded personal bests or tied their personals bests on day two of the Gibson Invitational," said head coach Diane Wholey.

"We are excited to travel to Iowa next week for competition at the Drake Relays and the Kip Janvrin Invitational at Simpson College. We are looking for more standout performances from the crew as we get closer to the conference championship."

The first-place effort was the Leathernecks' lone win of the two-day meet, but other key "firsts" occurred in the 400-meter dash and 1,500-meter run, of which Colley, Brown, and Paulina Wuestefeld competed in for the first time this season.

The men finished third and fifth, respectively, in the 400 with times of 48.50 and 48.88, while Wuestefeld was seconds away from entering her name into the Leathernecks' record book. She closed in on the 10th best time in the program history (4:37.24) with a new 1,500 PR of 4:38.47.

Continuing her theme of senior achievements, Amelia Peterson has finished either first or second in every triple jump event she's competed in this outdoor season; she took No. 2 at Indiana State with a mark of 11.94 meters (39' 2.25").

The Leathernecks will use the Kip Janvrin Open (April 22-23) and the Drake Relays (April 22-24) for last-minute prep ahead of the Summit League Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
