MACOMB, Ill. - Playing in its own backyard for the first time this spring, Western Illinois women's soccer (0-7-0, 0-7-0) began a weekend series versus North Dakota (1-2-0, 1-2-0) on Friday (March 5). An aggressive, offensive mentality by WIU kicked off the afternoon, but the visitors ultimately won a 2-0 decision.
WIU made several attempts in netting a goal during the first 45 minutes. The team fired 10 shots before reaching halftime - four of which happened during a five-minute stretch. However, North Dakota found a way to score first on a kick right outside of the penalty arc in the 20th minute.
Shortly into the second half, Western suffered an 'own goal' score that bumped the Fighting Hawks lead to 2-0. WIU saw fewer opportunities during the latter frame - only three shots total.
Zoe Clarke led the Leathernecks' offensive attack with three shots. Amy Andrews, Jenna Lundgren, and Natalie Nagle all added two apiece. Megan Rasmussen played in the net for all 90 minutes and collected a game-high six saves. WIU's 13 shots were the second-highest made by the team this season. Five of those chances were on goal.
WIU will have another shot at the Fighting Hawks this Sunday (Feb. 7) at 1 p.m.
