Leathernecks Fall Short in Sunday Closer

Western’s offense again saw many kicking opportunities on Sunday.

MACOMB, Ill. - Back on Northwest Field for round two against North Dakota (2-2-0, 2-2-0), Western Illinois women's soccer (0-8-0, 0-8-0) worked hard in attempting to make a second-half comeback but unfortunately ran out of time in a 2-1 setback. The visitors ultimately took the Summit League series in a two-game sweep.

Early into the contest, North Dakota kicked in a goal around the 8th minute after four initial tries. A few corner kicks happened by the Fighting Hawks next, before scoring again right outside the box to go up 2-0 at halftime.

WIU entered the second 45 minutes with hunger in its eyes - firing three shots in four minutes. In the 52nd minute, Jenna Lundgren earned a penalty kick and completed the deed to put her Leathernecks on the board. Five more shots erupted from Western as the period progressed, but North Dakota hung on to take the afternoon victory.

WIU totaled 15 team shots, marked for second-highest in a game this spring. Lundgren led the way with four, while Amy Andrews and Natalie Nagle chipped in three and two, respectively. Goalkeeper Megan Rasmussen grabbed a game-high six saves.

Another Dakota foe awaits Western later this week, when the team visits the Coyotes of South Dakota on Friday (March 12) to kick off another league series.
