Leathernecks Rally Late to Win Series Finale, 9-7

Western Illinois used a four-run eighth to defeat NDSU on Sunday (March 21.

MACOMB, Ill. - The Western Illinois baseball team (5-12, 1-3) rallied in the eighth to take the series finale 9-7 over first-place North Dakota State Bison (14-4, 3-1) on Sunday (March 21) afternoon.

"Very proud of how this team responded after an emotional day yesterday," head coach Andy Pascoe said. "We came out with a lot of energy and got great pitching performances from Jace Warkentien then Jackson Gray picking up his teammate with a great effort in relief. We had good at-bats all day then had another senior, Kevin Raisbeck,  step up with a clutch two-out go-ahead base hit. This group makes it fun to come to the yard every day."

The victory marked the first for head coach Andy Pascoe at Alfred D. Boyer.
For the third straight game, the Leathernecks scored in their first frame. Alex Dorethy hit an RBI single, and Luke Schwartz smacked his second double of the game to make it 2-1. He finished the opening series batting .500 (7-14) with four doubles and 3 RBI.

After NDSU tied it (2-2) in the second, WIU regained the lead, 4-2, behind a Kory Olsen double down the right-field line.

Jace Warkentien erased the two runs he allowed in the first and second, and shutout the Bison batters for three consecutive innings. He limited the opposition to four hits and had a season-high six strikeouts.

The visitors then tied it in the sixth (5-5) behind a two-run home run and an error. The Bison took advantage of another WIU mistake as a balk gave them a 6-5 lead.

Jackson Gray (1-0) earned his first career victory as he threw two full innings and struck out three hitters.

WIU began the late rally and loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth. Kevin Raisbeck came through in the clutch and singled up the middle to retake the lead, 7-6. Olsen continued the push and added some insurance runs with a single that brought in Derek Botaletto and Schwartz.

Austin Edwards entered the ninth and earned his team-leading third save.

Western Illinois welcomes South Dakota State next weekend on March 26-28.
