Sears' Complete Game Shutout Splits Doubleheader vs. Jacks

Brett Sears (2-2) tossed a complete-game shutout to split the doubleheader against South Dakota State on Friday (March 26).

MACOMB, Ill. - Brett Sears continues to add to his resume this season, as his complete-game shutout helped Western Illinois (6-13, 2-4) split a doubleheader (5-10, 5-0) against South Dakota State (7-11, 2-4) on Friday (March 26).

"So much of this game revolves around what happens on the mound," head coach Andy Pascoe. "We didn't get a good start in the first game and then let their guy settle in way too much. After that, we didn't play clean baseball. Brett Sears responded in a huge way and gave us a big start in the second game - he was absolutely dialed in. Derek Botaletto came through with a big RBI knock for us and it was good to see Toby Allred get into a ball and hit a big home run."

Game 1: SDSU 10, WIU 3

In the series opener, both sides plated runs in the first, with SDSU holding a 3-2 lead. Chase VanDerGinst drew a bases-loaded walk, and Kory Olsen hit an RBI groundout.

The Jackrabbits pitching held WIU to one hit and run the rest of the way to take game one, 10-3.

Johnny Beck made his sixth appearance and tied his career-high of five innings. The lefty completed five frames for the second time this season and allowed one run with three strikeouts.

Game 2: WIU 5, SDSU 0

In-game two of the twin-bill, the Leathernecks bounded back to even the series.

Sears (2-2) added to his resume of a win over No. 4 Louisville in the season opener with a complete game (7 IP) shutout in Summit League play. The righty limited SDSU to three hits with three strikeouts to earn his second victory of the season.

The complete-game shutout is the second by a Leatherneck arm this season - Chandler Fochs (March 13 vs. Saint Louis).

WIU scored its runs in the middle frames. Derek Botaletto knocked a two-out RBI single to bring two across. On the next pitch, Toby Allred launched his first career home run into the trees over the left-field fence and pushed Western ahead 4-0 in the fourth.

In the next inning, Trenton Bauer singled up the middle to make it 5-0 for his team-leading 23rd hit and 14th RBI. The single also continued his six-game hit streak, which is tied for the longest this season.

Western Illinois and South Dakota State retake the diamond tomorrow at 1 p.m. Jace Warkentien is set to make the start.
