Leathernecks Drop Heartbreaker in Overtime

Natalie Nagle scored the first Leatherneck goal of the season.

QUINCY, Ill. - The Western Illinois women's soccer team has continued to battle this past three games, from setting its season-high in shots, to outshooting its opponent and hitting the post and crossbar multiple times.

In game two versus Kansas City (4-3-0, 4-2-0), the Leathernecks (0-6-0, 0-6-0) dropped a heartbreaker in double overtime, 2-1.

Searching for the first Leatherneck goal of the season, it couldn't have been better placed in the back of the next. Senior Natalie Nagle soared a ball from well over 25 yards out past the diving KC goalie into the far left side to tie 1-1 in the 61st minute.

After Isabel Navas Rodriguez stopped a breakaway opportunity,  Lauriane Castonguay checked in and made her Leatherneck debut in goal. She proved to be big as she stopped back-to-back shots to start the second half and keep it a one-goal game.

The WIU attack was efficient in its shots, with seven out of 10 on goal. All three from Amy Andrews were on net as she nearly earned the game-winner to start the first overtime period. The senior trio of Lauryn Peters, Jenna Lundgren, and Bridget Schuler also had a shot a frame.

Zoe Clarke almost mirrored her fellow senior goal scorer with a shot from distance, but her shot drilled the crossbar with less than 50 seconds to go in the match.

Kansas City took a 1-0 advantage in the 45th minute off a rebound and scored the game-winner at the 105th-minute mark off a corner.

Western Illinois welcomes North Dakota next weekend on Friday (March 5) and Sunday (March 7).
