Big Records at the Big Meet

Ackeen Colley is Western's newest record holder in the 800-meter run.

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Grand Valley State Big Meet - Saturday (Feb. 13) was really, really good to the Western Illinois track and field program.

To summarize: Ackeen Colley set a school record in his first meet wearing a WIU bib; he ran the second leg of a 4x4 relay that recorded the fourth-fastest time in Leatherneck history; and altogether, WIU posted four new all-time marks and several personal records.

"I'm really proud of how well we competed today," said assistant coach Brandon Hazouri. "We had 21 total PRs this weekend for the distance athletes. It's so great to see their hard work keep paying off.  The biggest highlight of the day was the men's 800 where Richard [Brown] and Ackeen both broke the old school record, and [Lucas] Hofer set a massive PR to move to sixth all-time."

As a two-time Division II national qualifier, it was only a matter of time before Colley put the Summit League on notice. The Oklahoma transfer made his season debut at the GVSU meet and left Michigan with a pair of first-place finishes in the 800-meter run (1:49.09) and 4x4 relay (3:17.20). The former set a school record while the latter earned him, Lucas Hofer, Logan Lommel, and Richard Brown a spot on WIU's all-time list as fourth-best.

Brown (1:49.10) and Hofer (1:52.52) also had a career day in the 800-meter run, jumping to second and sixth, respectively, in Leatherneck history. Together, the foursome currently sit first, second, and fourth on the Summit League's indoor performance list.

Colley and Richard are also ranked 12th and 13th, respectively, on the NCAA Division I qualifier list.

But Western's men weren't the only ones to re-write history.

Senior Tyronay Taylor also left her mark after posting an 11.58-meter long jump, which stands 10th all-time on WIU's indoor list.

Western's indoor season continues at the EIU Friday Night meet on Friday, Feb. 19.
