Distance Runners Race Well at Big Meet

Mackenzie Goldring, April Goetz, and Habibu Moise each recorded a PR in the 5K event.

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The 5K was the only event on the calendar for the Western Illinois track and field program at the Grand Valley State Big Meet - Friday, and three Leathernecks ran away with a new collegiate-best.

The women's event saw Mackenzie Goldring and April Goetz finish one after another in 18:37.74 and 18:38.41, respectively. The two shaved substantial time off their previous personal records -- Goldring's hovered around 20 minutes -- while Habibu Moise recorded his new PR at 15:49.40.

"I thought Mackenzie and April did a great job competing. It was awesome to have Mackenzie walk away with a big PR at a distance she is still learning how to race. April is always a gritty racer, and I am proud of her for stepping up and coming out with almost a 20-second PR," said assistant coach Brandon Hazouri. "Habibu competed well within his heat, and I look forward to watching him get back in the rhythm of racing as the season continues."

Western's remaining field included Elyse Mathews (20:06.90), Kaitlyn Mathews (21:25.16), and Cam Schroeder (16:09.52). All six return to action at the GVSU Big Meet - Saturday, which will also see the entire WIU roster compete.
