Track and Field announces 2021-2022 Indoor Schedule

| By:

The Leathernecks will compete in five regular season meets before the Summit League Championships.

Macomb, Ill.- The Western Illinois Track and Field indoor season is right around the corner, as the Leathernecks will look to prove people wrong in head coach Trey Brokaw's first season. Western Illinois will compete in five regular-season meets before postseason play at the Summit League Indoor Championships. Four of the five meets will be hosted by power five institutions.

"We have a very competitive schedule this year and that should help our team reach its fullest potential. Every meet we will be working towards individual improvements, and in turn that should greatly help our team performances when we get to the Summit League Indoor Championships in late February," said head coach Trey Brokaw. "We've had some interest from WIU football and soccer athletes who want to join the track team now that their season is over. It's a great way for them to improve speed and power for their primary sports while also bolstering our presence in track & field."

"We will also be adding a mid-year transfer from South American, Briza Dúre. Briza is the u-20 national record holder in the 100, 200, and 400 from Paraguay. She should make an immediate impact on our programs success in the sprinting events. Randy Glean and the folks over in the WIU International Admissions office really did a great job helping us get her here."

"Regardless of if it's the seasoned veterans, freshmen newcomers, multi-sport athletes, or international transfers, our staff is very excited for the season opener at the University of Iowa on January 14/15."

The season begins at the University of Iowa when WIU competes in the Hawkeye Invitational (Jan. 14-15). The Leathernecks then head east to Indiana State University to compete in the John Gartland Invitational (Jan. 21-22).

The bulk of the season will start in February, beginning with the Meyo Invitational hosted by the University of Notre Dame (Feb. 4-5). Western Illinois will then compete in the Iowa State Classic hosted by Iowa State University (Feb. 11-12). The Leathernecks head back to Notre Dame a week later for their final regular season meet in the Alex Wilson Invitational.

The postseason begins with the Summit League Championships, hosted by the University of North Dakota (Feb. 25-26). The NCAA Championships will take place at the Birmingham Complex in Birmingham, Ala. (March 11-12).

Western Illinois was picked to finish seventh in the men's preseason poll and eighth in the women's preseason poll, but will look to begin a new chapter in the program with Coach Brokaw now leading the helm.
