Andrews Brace Leads Leatherneck Victory

Now with nine goals on the season, Andrews is within striking distance of several program records.

The Western Illinois University Fighting Leatherneck Women's Soccer played their second game of the weekend on Sunday (Oct. 3), defeating the University of South Dakota Coyotes 2-1 in Vermillion, S.D.

The Leathernecks took a lead early in the game with Amy Andrews getting on the end of a Natalie Nagle pass, putting it to the lower left-hand corner and giving Western a one goal advantage in the 11th minute. She would double the lead 20 minutes after receiving a ball from Emmy Ellington, giving her two goals in the game and helping the team take a commanding first-half lead.

At half, Western Illinois held a 2-0 advantage and led the game in several statistical categories. They had seven shots (five on goal) while drawing five fouls, and the defense limited South Dakota's offense to just three shots (two on goal).

The Coyotes would get a goal of their own in the 77th minute, but the defense held tight and the Leathernecks were 2-1 winners when the final horn sounded.

19 different Leathernecks made an appearance in the matchup with Lauryn Peters, Jenna Lundgren and Bridget Schuler playing the full 90, and Sam Brooks playing a season-high 65 minutes. The team finished with 12 shots (six on goal), drew seven fouls and Isabel Navas Rodriguez made three saves.

Amy Andrews' strong season continued with today's performance, and she's now within striking distance of several program records. With nine goals on the year, the senior forward is now one goal away from the top-mark for goals in a season by a Leatherneck women's soccer player; the total of 10 was set by Amanda Wandtke in 2001. Andrews also has 23 career goals, one off of Ashley Hoch's 24 that is the program-best for a single player.

With 20 points (nine goals and two assists this season), Andrews is four points away from the top mark in a Leatherneck women's soccer season. That record, also set by Wandtke, is 24. Andrews' average of two per game would set the record if the year ended today.

There are seven games remaining in the season, and the Leathernecks' next matchup is scheduled for Friday (Oct. 8) at John MacKenzie Alumni Field. Kickoff against Omaha is scheduled for 3 p.m.
