What a start!

Western Illinois opened its indoor season with three event wins and two new all-time marks.

ALLENDALE, Mich. -  The Western Illinois track and field program put its best foot forward, literally and figuratively, at the GVSU Bill Clinger Classic Friday (Jan. 29), and the all-time records list will need to be adjusted.

The season-opening meet showed why newcomers Paulina Wuestefeld and Richard Brown were deserving of Summit League preseason recognition and why Amelia Peterson should be another "athlete to watch." All three recorded an event win.

Wuestefeld was the first to cross the finish line in the mile run (5:08.37), Brown did the same in the 800-meter (1:51.50), and Peterson leapt the farthest in the triple jump (11.84 meters / 38' 10.25"). The performance also earned Brown a spot in the Leathernecks' record book - third all-time - and strengthened Peterson's current placement at fifth. She also set a personal record in the long jump (5.51m / 18'1"), where she placed second in a 10-woman field.

"There were a lot of bright spots at today's meet," said head coach Diane Wholey. "We were excited to be back at a meet after practically an 11-month hiatus. The team has been working hard throughout the fall and early this semester, so I am grateful for the opportunity to compete and challenge our athletes. There were great performances across the board. Overall, we are pleased with the start, firm in our understanding that we need to continue to work hard, and optimistic for what the rest of the season will bring."

"I'm really happy with the distance team," added assistant coach Brandon Hazouri. "Anytime we can win at this level is something to be proud of. The performances from Paulina and Richard were great, and great ways to start their career."

The Leathernecks return to Grand Valley on Feb. 13 for the Saturday Big Meet.

Several Leathernecks record PRs throughout the day. Below are a few (bolded) from those who finished in the top half of their field.
