Busch's Senior Season Continues with Silver Medal, School Record

Michaela Busch broke her indoor school record in the pentathlon en route to a second-place finish.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – It's pretty incredible to think of Michaela Busch's journey through the 2020 season so far. The Western Illinois senior has been hampered by injury and unable to compete to the fullest of her abilities, but none of that mattered on day one of the 2020 Summit League Championships presented by U.S. Air Force Special Warfare (Feb. 28).

"Tradition of Tough" was an understatement for Busch, who received a silver medal in the pentathlon while also setting a WIU indoor record of 3,677 points.

"It feels unreal," she said. "I knew I haven't been able to practice any of my events, several weeks for some and a couple of months for others, so I came to conference just to do the best with what I had to work with. I'm beyond joyful to have been so successful in the long jump and the 800, but I know there were some hiccups in the other events due to being away. I feel blessed. It's beyond words how great being a track athlete is. I just love my coaches, my team, and the sport."

En route to the second-place performance, Busch finished second in the high jump (1.61 meters /5' 3.25"), long jump (5.53 meters /18' 1.75"), and 800-meter run (2:22.45). The last two events also marked indoor personal records.

She set Western's previous pent record at 3,676 at last year's indoor championships, and was the second Leatherneck senior to medal Friday,
as Bo Brasseur struck gold on her sixth and final attempt in the long jump (5.95 meters / 19' 6.25").

Day two of the Summit League Championships will see Logan Lommel compete in the 800-meter run.

He claimed the last spot in the finals with a preliminary time of 1:57.23 and was also a member of the men's 4,000-meter distance medley relay that placed fourth (10:33.56).

Western's appearance in the league meet continues Saturday at 11 a.m.
