Butler Holds on to Take Series Opener

Western loaded the bases in the ninth, but the Bulldogs held on in a 3-2 defeat.

INDIANAPOLIS - The Western Illinois baseball team (0-4) loaded the bases in the ninth in a one-run game, but the Butler Bulldogs (4-0) held on and closed the door in a 3-2 defeat on Saturday (Feb. 22) afternoon.

"Javin Drake gave us another great performance on the bump, and Jack Carberry came in and was lights out to give us an opportunity to win a ball game," head coach Andy Pascoe said. "We had some chances offensively in a few different innings with Luke Schwartz and Dillon Sears having great games, but could not come up with a hit or a simple RBI groundout. We have to do a better job in those situations of finding a way to get the run across and on the flip side, be better with taking care of the baseball defensively."

Alex Dorethy put the Leathernecks up 1-0 with his first home run of the season in the top of the second. The solo shot was his first of the season and Western's second in the last two games.

Butler responded and plated it's only runs of the series opener in the middle frames. Tied 1-1, a two-out single along with an error put the Bulldogs ahead 3-2.

WIU was only retired in order once, and after Toby Allred reached on the seventh error of the game to leadoff the ninth, followed by Dillon Sears who knocked his third of the day. A hit by pitch loaded the bases with one out, but the Big East opponent worked out of the threat to stay undefeated.

"The good thing is we are starting to put ourselves in better situations offensively, and I am confident we will have guys step up and get the big hit."

Sears reached base each time he stepped to the plate with three singles and a walk.

Right-hander Javin Drake threw 6.2 innings of work and struck out four while only being charged for two runs. Jack Carberry relieved the senior in the sixth and threw a perfect eighth as he fanned two batters.

Western Illinois concludes the series with a doubleheader tomorrow at Grand Park. Game one begins at 10 a.m., and Jace Warkentien gets the start.
