Early Offense Downs Western in Series Finale

Tennessee put up an eight-run second to sweep the series finale on Sunday (Feb. 16) at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Early offense from Tennessee (3-0) downed Western Illinois (0-3) 23-4 in the series finale on Sunday (Feb. 16) afternoon at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. 

The Vols strung together three straight singles to load the bases in the bottom of the second with no outs. Seven total hits with three doubles in the frame put Western down 8-0.

Western plated its first runs of the season in the fifth. Tyler Estes got the first Leatherneck hit in back to back games, and after a walk, Dillon Sears roped a two-run triple down the right-field line and came around to score on a groundout to make it 11-3. 

DH Trenton Bauer hit a no-doubter over the right-field fence for his first career home run to lead off the seventh. 

Johnny Beck replaced starter Jack Carberry (0-1) and made his WIU debut on the mound to end the second and finished two innings followed by newcomer Austin Edwards who completed two full. 

Western Illinois travels to the Jackie Robinson Tournament next weekend and takes on Southern (Feb. 21), Alcron State (Feb. 22) and Jackson State (Feb. 23). All three games will take place at Trustman Park in Pearl, Miss.

  • 14 student-athletes made their Western Illinois debuts on opening weekend. 
  • Three Newcomers - Jayden Gibson (3), Tyler Estes (2) and Gage Cruz (1) combined for six of 11 Western's total hits in the opening weekend.
  • WIU falls to 6-43 all-time versus the SEC and 0-3 against Tennessee 
  • Dillon Sears recorded the first extra-base hit and Trenton Bauer the first home run of the 2020 season. The home run was Bauer's first career. 
  • Johnny Beck and Jack Bell each earned their first career strikeout.
