Leatherneck Sprinters Race Well, Tinsley Improves All-Time Mark

The Leathernecks stellar indoor season captured eight ‘Top 5’ finishes.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Bo Brasseur and Sierra Long ran their hearts out. Carrissa Tinsley improved upon her school all-time mark. And all in all, Western Illinois track and field had another stellar showing.

Saturday's Illini Invitational (January 25) marked Western's third straight Power Five hosted meet, and it concluded with eight 'Top 5' finishes. 

Western highlighted the 200 and 400-meter dashes, and Brasseur and Long were the stars. Both recorded an indoor personal record in the 200, where Brasseur also placed third. Her time of 25.73 trailed only Eastern Illinois (25.30) and the host (25.70), while Long was just a few seconds shy of the 'Top 5' with a sixth-place effort of 26.25. 

Last weekend, the sophomore left the Hawkeye Invitational as the victor of the 400-meter dash, and only one finished in front of her in Champaign. The 19-woman field saw Long clock in at second (58.86) and Brasseur in fourth (59.72), and the event also captured a PR for the senior from Belgium. 

Tinsley earned Western another solid performance with a second-place, 14.09-meter (46-02.75) shot put. The PR added distance to her school mark that already ranks sixth all-time in women's indoor history. 

Western returns to the track next Saturday at the Grand Valley State Mike Lints Alumni Open.
