The Leathernecks play host to Missouri State on Friday, Aug. 23 at 5 p.m.

MACOMB, Ill. – After posting two shutouts in preseason play, the Western Illinois women's soccer team hosts Missouri State for the regular season on Friday (Aug. 23) at 5 p.m.

PRESEASON RECAP: The Purple and Gold controlled both sides of the ball in preseason play, blasting a total of 65 shots en route to recording two shutouts. Seven different Leathernecks found the back of the net in the two matches including five in the opener with victories over Southeastern Community College and Quincy.

SCOUTING THE BEARS: Missouri State enters the 2019 season after a 2-1 record in exhibition play defeating Emporia State and Drury. The Bears were selected to finish fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference preseason poll after a conference mark of 2-3-2 last year.

2018 MVFC Goalkeeper of the Year Kaitlin Maxwell and All-Conference first-team selection Brittney Robinson headline the eight returners. Following a duel between the Leathernecks, Missouri State travels to Arkansas State on Sunday (Aug. 25).

PRIMEAU'S PREGAME QUOTE: "Our girls have been working hard since they stepped foot on campus and I'm especially happy with the level of competitiveness the newcomers have exhibited thus far," assistant coach Josee Primeau said. "We have had both newcomers and returners show well in various positions, and after a solid preseason consisting of two shutout victories, we're excited to get the 2019 campaign started. Missouri State has a great team, and it will be a true test of where we are at and what we need to continue to work on. This is the most talented, well-rounded, group that I've had in my four years at Western and I think we will surprise some people this year if we are able to remain healthy and get better every game."

ALL EYES ON YAKIMA: Heading into her junior season, Lauryn Peters was named a Summit League Player to Watch. She has notched back-to-back seasons with at least one goal and two assists. Last season, Peters started all 18 matches and finished tied for first on the team with 14 shots on goal. The Yakima, Wash., native has logged over 2,400 minutes in just two seasons and has appeared in all 34 games with 30 starts. Peters recorded a shot in nearly every match but six and ended the 2018 season tied for second in assists (2) and shots (28).

UP NEXT: Following the regular-season opener against the Bears, Western Illinois next weekend at IUPUI (Aug. 30) and Kansas City (Sept. 1).
