Geurts & the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup

Former Leatherneck Loes Geurts is playing in goal for the Netherlands in the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup.

MACOMB, Ill. - Every four years, soccer fans across the globe are tuned into the FIFA World Cup. The international competition fields the best of the best, only 24 nations in the women's finals, and the current pool includes the Netherlands and former Western Illinois standout Loes Geurts.

Since 2005, Geurts has amassed over 120 caps for Netherlands' women's national team, and her decorated career has seen the country capture its first-ever Women's World Cup finals qualification in 2014 as well as a UEFA European Championship title in 2017.

In goal, Guerts was named second-team all-league for the Leathernecks in 2005, where she finished the season with seven wins, three of which were shutouts, and a 74.7 percent save percentage. She ranks 'Top 10' in several Leatherneck single-season records including goals against average (1.35 / 7th all-time), wins (5 / T5), shutouts (3 / T7),  and minutes (1,265:46 / 12th).

With a 3-0 record after Tuesday's 2-1 success over Japan, Netherlands sits atop Group E and advanced to the quarterfinal round. Geurts and the Oranje are scheduled to take on Italy Saturday, June 29, at 8 a.m. CT.
