Big Ten Competition Awaits Leathernecks in Next Game

Western heads to Iowa City for a 6 p.m. game at Iowa on Tuesday.

Western Illinois (16-25) at Iowa (26-16)
Date: April 30
Site: Iowa City, Iowa  / Duane Banks Field
Game Times:  6 p.m.

Quite Familiar: The Leathernecks are no strangers to the Big Ten competitor as the two share 28 meetings dating back to the 2004 season. A year ago, Western led Iowa for five innings before dropping the 5-4, go-ahead run in the ninth.

A Dream Realized: Left fielder Steve McShane received the opportunity of a lifetime with an invitation to the Pittsburgh Steelers' mini-camp (April 29). The two-sport student-athlete was a three-time Second Team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference selection who finished his career with 2,375 rushing yards, 1,031 receiving yards and 32 total touchdowns.

On the diamond, he was a First Team All-Summit League selection last season and appeared in 146 career games with a .257 batting average, 35 stolen bases, 111 hits, and 73 runs.

Western's Last Outing: The rally was there, but WIU fell short of completing the comeback (and capturing the series win) in the set finale at North Dakota State.

The Leathernecks scored five unanswered runs down the stretch in the 8-7 loss, dropped game two 7-1 and worked their lone win the 7-2 opener.

•    Jace Warkentien recorded the win in game one; pitched seven innings for the second time this season with a season-low two runs and career-high 10 strikeouts
•    Austin Emanuel and Jackson Gray each went 2.0 innings in the series without a run scored
•    Kevin Raisbeck hit a team-best .462 (6-for-14) with five runs

Next Up: A few weeks ago, the Leathernecks swept Oral Roberts for the first time in program history, and the two will meet again this weekend in Tulsa, Okla.
