Season-Highs Catapult Leathernecks to Home-Opening Victory

Western posted a season-high 16 hits and 16 runs in their home debut.

MACOMB, Ill. – In their first true home game of the season, four Western Illinois freshmen took the mound at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium Tuesday (March 19) and kept Iowa Wesleyan at bay in a seven-inning, 16-3 victory.

The baseball matchup saw the Leathernecks (6-12) post a season-high 16 hits and 16 runs en route to their sixth win.

Iowa Wesleyan held a brief 1-0 advantage through the middle of the first inning, and it quickly became a deficit as Chandler Fochs and the Leatherneck offense found their groove. The outing marked the freshman pitcher's first start of the season, and after loading the bases to start things off, he retired three consecutive hitters – two on swinging strikeouts.

Fochs' appearance ended in 3.0 innings, as he yielded two hits and a run with six strikeouts before tagging in fellow newcomer Kyle Rosenfeld

"It was a little rocky at first, a little nerves, but once Coach [Brownlee] talked to me I settled down, started breathing more and found the strike zone a lot more," said Fochs. "This is what preparing all high school was for; it felt really good to finally have a home game with the whole team and just compete in front of all our fans."

Western plated four runs in the bottom of the first, crowned by a two-RBI triple from Drue Galassi, and never looked back. Kevin Raisbeck, Bailey Montgomery, and Grant Hannant all went 3-for-3 on the day, and the latter two joined Galassi in recording three RBIs each.

In total, five Leathernecks pitchers appeared in Tuesday's game. Fochs collected the win, while freshmen Rosenfeld, Jordan Cheek, and Parker Heidorf combined for 3.1 innings with no earned runs and one hit apiece.

Western returns to Alfred D. Boyer Stadium Friday for a Summit League series against North Dakota State. Game one begins at 3 p.m.
