Leathernecks Score Early, Drop Series Opener versus North Dakota State

Western scored four runs in the very first inning.

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois baseball team notched four runs in the very first inning of its Friday (March 22) series opener against North Dakota State but was unable to sustain the advantage in the 5-4 Summit League loss.

Western (6-13, 1-3 Summit) stayed out ahead for five innings, before the Bison began to stack runs in the third.

After a pair of sacrifice flys, NDSU looked to end the stanza on a ground out, but a throwing error not only allowed Steve McShane to reach, but CJ Schaeffer Jr. also rounded the bases from first to home.

Drue Galassi ripped a single up the middle to settle Western's lead at 4-0, and it was cut in half after NDSU tabbed a sac fly of its own in the fifth frame. Three Bison crossed home plate the following inning as the visitors took their first lead and sustained it through the final pitch.

Western left four runners in scoring position after the big first inning, including one at second base to conclude the game. Galassi had a hand in his team's best scoring opportunity when he recorded a standup, leadoff double to start the sixth, and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. He finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Javin Drake pitched his first no-decision of the season in 5.2 innings with six hits, six strikeouts, and six runs.

Due to forecasted rain in the area, the teams will now play a Saturday doubleheader. Game one has an expected start time of 12 p.m. Game one will air on ESPN3.
