Leathernecks Split Saturday Doubleheader

Bailey Montgomery recorded a team-high five RBIs in Western’s 9-6 victory.

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois baseball split a Saturday (March 23) doubleheader against North Dakota State by way of a 9-6 victory and 11-1 loss. The decisions saw the Bison claim the overall series while the Leathernecks fell to 2-4 in Summit League play.

Western 9, North Dakota State 6

Improving his record to 3-0 in the come-from-behind victory, Jack Carberry became the Leathernecks' winningest pitcher this season. The sophomore righty entered the game with his team trailing, 5-3, at the top of the sixth, and gave up just one run in his appearance.

The sides swapped leads late in the afternoon until back-to-back 3-run innings provided Western with breathing room. Things sat locked at 6-6 at the midpoint of the eighth, but the stalemate didn't last long as Trent Bauer led off the home half of the inning with a double. He advanced to third base on a passed ball and became the tying score when Deion Thompson singled through the right side.

The Leathernecks went on to load the bases for the second time in as many innings, and Bailey Montgomery brought in the final two runs on a double. The successful outing saw the senior go 3-for-5 with a career-high five RBI.

"I loved coming up with guys on base, and just doing what I can to try and help the team," said Montgomery. "We've just got to stick with the process. It's coming in daily to practice and games to take care of the little things and what we can control. We'll just keep at it and keep going."

Western outhit the Bison, 14-6, for their second most hits compiled this season.

North Dakota State 11, Western 1

Drue Galassi's ground out tied the rubber match at 1-1 at the bottom of the third, and back-to-back explosive innings pushed the Bison ahead 9-1. The visitors held a narrow 10-8 edge in hits by the end of the fifth inning but were able to make the most of their opportunities.

The Leathernecks had a chance to add a few in the sixth with bases loaded and one out, and lined out to the pitcher for a double play.

Nine Leathernecks were left stranded on base in the seven-inning decision.

Western returns to Alfred D. Boyer Stadium Tuesday for a 3 p.m. tilt versus St. Ambrose.
