Leathernecks Sting St. Ambrose in Non-League Victory

Western has won three of its last five games after Tuesday’s win over St. Ambrose.

MACOMB, Ill. – Victorious in three of its last five ballgames, Western Illinois' baseball team added its latest win in a 13-3 decision over St. Ambrose Tuesday (March 26).

The Leathernecks tabbed a run in five of the seven innings, and the outing marked back-to-back non-Summit League games where they finished with 10-plus.

"The guys did a good job," said head coach Ryan Brownlee. "We've been a little more relaxed in the week than we have been in the weekends, and we've got to carry that through. It doesn't matter who you're playing. You have to get yourself in the right frame of mind when you take the field. We've got guys at the plate that are starting to figure things out which is promising. We just need to keep hammering out what we've been doing in practice and continue to get better."

On the bats of the first four hitters in its starting lineup, Western pieced together back-to-back, two-run innings to start the game. Kevin Raisbeck, Deion Thompson, and Bailey Montgomery were all credited with an RBI during the stretch, and when one swing pulled the Bees within a run, Western loaded the bases the next inning.

The score read 4-3 in the middle of the third after St. Ambrose recorded a 3-RBI home run, but it didn't stick long as Western scored five in the home half of the inning. Thompson drew a bases-loaded walk to ignite the rally, and it spiraled into a 9-3 advantage when two Leathernecks scored on a fielding error.

Tuesday also marked the first career start for Jordan Cheek. He pitched three full innings with three runs, three hits, and three strikeouts.

Next up, the Leathernecks hit the road for Nebraska. A three-game set at Omaha begins Friday at 1 p.m.
