Leathernecks Fall in Series Opener at Omaha

The set continues with a Sunday doubleheader.

OMAHA, Neb. – Western Illinois' baseball team met Omaha at Seymour Smith Park Saturday (March 30) for the first game of a three-game set and fell 8-2 in the Summit League decision.  

Each side recorded four hits by the start of the fourth inning, but it was the Mavericks who were slightly more successful in converting those efforts into runs. The home team jumped out to an early 2-0 edge in the first inning, while Western came up short in its chances after a two-out bases loaded situation in the second. 

Jace Warkentien retired eight straight between the second and fourth innings, and when a single interrupted the stretch, he capped the frame with a strikeout looking. The Leathernecks trailed 6-0 at the end of his appearance (six full innings) and finished the ballgame outhit, 15-8.  The team avoided a shutout in the eighth stanza when Drue Galassi scored on a fielder's choice. 

The series concludes in a Sunday doubleheader that starts at 11 a.m.
