Indoor Championship SZN: WIU Travels to Brookings for Summit League Meet

The two-day championship meet begins Friday, Feb. 22.

About the Meet: The two-day championships begin Friday, Feb. 22, inside the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex in Brookings, S.D.  

Day 1 of the Championships - Friday, Feb. 22: multi-events at 9:30 a.m., field at 3 p.m., track at 3:30 p.m. 
Day 2 of the Championships - Saturday, Feb. 23: multi-events at 9:30 a.m., field at 11:30 a.m., track at 1 p.m. 

Western's Last Outing: The Leathernecks concluded their regular season at the EIU Friday Night Special where two-sport student-athlete Isaiah LeSure became the first Leatherneck in 10 years to log a seven-meter long jump. 

He won the event with a mark of 7.12, and was one of Western's four first-place performances in Charleston. Allie Scott (triple jump / 11.28), Justin Montalto (400-meter dash / 51.55) and the women's 4x400 meter relay team of Sierra Long, Bo Brasseur, Michaela Busch, Megan Reed (3:58.61) all bested their competition, and overall Western's men tied for third in team standings against 11 other programs while the women finished fifth. 

Entering the Record Book: Western has shaken up its all-time indoor marks a few times this season, highlighted by a pair of school records.

Summit League History: Last year's indoor championship saw Hailey Tranchitella, Megan Reed, Jamieria Stennis, and Abigail Richter joined together in the distance medley relay; the women not only captured the best time of the year in 12:24.48, but also the seventh-best effort in program history.

The Leathernecks head to Brookings in search of their first Summit League indoor title. Dating back to the 1983-84 season, Western's men have finished second in team standings in the 1991, 1994 and 2003 championships while the women were runner-up in 2004 and 2005. 

Next Up: Western will have a month to prepare for its outdoor slate which will begin Saturday, March 23, at the Southern Illinois Invite. For the first time since 2015 and the 11th in The Summit League history, Western will play host to the 2019 Outdoor Championships (May 8-10) at Hanson Field. 

The meet will mark Western's second hosted in Macomb as the 30th-Annual Lee Calhoun Meet will take place on April 19.
