Busch Shatters Indoor Record at Don DeNoon Invitational

Michaela Busch and Amelia Peterson both stood atop the winner’s podium in day one of the Don DeNoon Invitational.

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Western Illinois track and field has a star in junior jumper Michaela Busch. A season ago, she set the program's indoor pentathlon mark with 3,638 points, and in day one of the Don DeNoon Invitational (Feb. 1), she shattered the mark with 3,647.

The five-event contest pit Busch against student-athletes from Ole Miss and Murray State and she defeated all competition in the high jump (1.65 meters|5'5") and shot put (11.47m | 37'7.75") while placing second in the 60-meter hurdles (9.24) and 800-meter run (2:28.26).

"Today was a great season opener for the pentathlon for Michaela," said head coach Diane Wholey. "It was a small field but a good challenge for her as she gets closer to the conference championship which always has a strong, deep field in the pent. Competing to the best of your ability is always our goal, and like today, it will bring good marks and improvements."

Busch's shot put throw set a new personal record, and she also recorded an indoor collegiate best in the long jump with a distance of 5.33 meters (17'6") where she finished fourth.

She wasn't the only Leatherneck to capture success in Carbondale as Amelia Peterson also won her event with a mark of 11.34 meters (37'2.5") in the triple jump.

Through day one, Western's women are currently midpack in the eight-team field with 25 points while the men are in fifth out of seven with five.

"We are looking forward to the rest of the events and a good showing by our team for the weekend."

The Leathernecks will continue its time in Carbondale Saturday as field events begin at 10 a.m. followed by track events at 11:15 a.m.
