Leathernecks Put Training Into Action in First Indoor Meet

The season-opener included a Western win and two new all-time marks.

CHARLESTON, Ill. – It's early, with just one meet in all of December, but Western Illinois'  track and field program put its fall training into action at the Eastern Illinois Early Bird Invite on Friday (Dec. 6). The first indoor meet of the season included 12 top-three finishes, with Amelia Peterson, Allie Scott, and Tyronay Taylor sweeping the first three spots in the long jump event.

"Today was a really good day for us with several PRs and great event series from several of our student-athletes," said head coach Diane Wholey. "It was great for us to have a meet this weekend after a long semester of training and before going into final exam week. Today was an opportunity to asses where our student-athletes are, if they have capitalized on their fall training, and provide feedback on the areas we need to work on."

Peterson had quite the day for the Leathernecks.

The preliminary round of the 60-meter dash saw her tie her PR at 8.03, and she later set the mark to beat in the long jump with an 11.64-meter PR.

Carrissa Tinsley also shined for the women, as she dominated in the weight throw to not only set a new collegiate-best but also move to 10th all-time in indoor history. The senior improved her mark with each throw before heaving a 16.31-meter effort on her last attempt. Western's record book was also shaken up by Tia Dorshorst's performance in the pole vault event, where with a mark of 3.30 meters she now sits seventh on the indoor record list.

For top five finishers, PRs continued to roll in as Patrick Michaels flashed power in the men's shot put event with a mark of 16.19 meters.
