MACOMB, Ill. –Nicole Beebe broke the Western Illinois women's cross country 6K record as a bevy of men's and women's WIU runners set personal records at the Leatherneck Open Friday evening (Oct. 25).

"I knew early on that Nicole was putting together a great race," head coach Diane Wholey said. "She created a big gap between herself and the rest of the runners while finishing incredibly strong."

Beebe topped Alycia Thurston's 2012 6K record of 21:48 by blazing through the course in just 21:38.5 to win the race. Hailey Tranchitella recorded her best time of 23:06.4 for a seventh-place finish. Quintin Thurman put together yet another 8K personal best and won the event with a final time of 26:54.9, around 35 seconds faster than his previous week's PR. Ross Smetzer maneuvered Spring Lake Park to record a personal record of his own at 27:09.8. Lucas Howett was behind Thurman at 28:07.5.

Sophomore Lucas Howett shattered his previous personal best by 16 seconds with a  (27:17.3). Newcomers Kameron Morgan (27:31.9) and Olin Ortiz (28:25.2) rounded out the lineup by both notching PR's.

"The men worked great together as a team today," Wholey said. "This is a great segue heading into the Summit League Championships."

The Summit League Cross Country Championships presented by U.S. Air Force Special Warfare will be ran at Rose Creek Golf Course in Fargo, N.D. Saturday (Nov. 2).
