Kick-off | The Western Illinois women's soccer team (6-5-1) hits the road to the Dakotas for duels against South Dakota State on Friday (Oct. 18) and North Dakota State on Sunday (Oct. 20).

Last Time Out | A corner midway through the first half made the difference for the Western Illinois women's soccer team (6-7-1, 2-2-0) as they dropped a 1-0 contest to the North Dakota Fighting Hawks (9-4-1, 3-1-0) on Sunday (Oct. 13) afternoon.

Western pieced together numerous chances with their final look in the 88th minute. Amy Andrews fired her third shot of the match, but a North Dakota defender stepped up and blocked it.

The Fighting Hawks scored the game-winning goal in the 25th minute on a corner. Megan Wright lofted a ball that curved into the top left corner of the net for her second of the season.

Andrews and Jenna Lundgren each fired three shots to help outshoot North Dakota 15-10 along with holding the possession advantage.

Also, on the offensive side of the ball, Natalie Sielaff and Bridget Schuler put together two shots each but couldn't find the back of the net.

In The League | So far in 2019 campaign, a trio of Leathernecks see their names in the Summit League ranks. On the offensive side of the ball, Cassidy Grunewald is tied for second with three assists, and Amy Andrews is tied for fourth with five goals. Rounding out the squad, Ines Palmiero Herrera is second with 66 saves.

Shots, shots, Everybody | Fourteen different players have fired a shot while wearing the Purple and Gold this season compared to only four who haven't. Zoe Clarke (28), Amy Andrews (28), Jenna Lundgren (18), and Emily Bollman (14) set the pace for WIU.

Why Not Us? | Before the 2019 season took off, the Western Illinois women's soccer team was selected to finish ninth in the Summit League coaches' preseason poll; however, the Purple and Gold had other ideas in mind. The Leathernecks are now in second with six points and a 2-2 mark in League play.

Reunited | Current graduate assistant coach, Nykosi Simmons, reunites with her former teammate and assistant coach Josee Primeau. The duo made a significant impact on the program at Mississippi Valley State. The four-year starters were selected to the SWAC Top 20 Players list, along with earning Most Valuable Player and the MVSU Female Athlete of the Year award.

Between the Pipes | Goalkeeper Ines Palmiero Herrera has continued to climb the ranks in the record book. On Sept. 23, she became fourth all-time in career saves against UNI and chases Victoria Kappel (274) for third all-time. Her seventh career shutout and fourth of the season moved her to third all-time in a season tying Meghan Tyk (2007). She stopped all five shots Purdue Fort Wayne had as she now is only one more win away from passing Samantha Clark (2006) for fifth all-time.

Scouting the Jackrabbits | South Dakota State host WIU on a nine consecutive shutout streak. The Jackrabbits are 11-3 overall, and 3-0 in Summit League play without allowing a goal since September 6 in a 1-0 loss to Drake. Leah Manuleleua leads SDSU with 18 total points and five game-winning goals.

Scouting the Bison | The Bison host Purdue Fort Wayne on Friday (Oct. 18) before the Leathernecks come to town. NDSU is 1-1-1 in the Summit League with an overall mark of 6-5-2. Elyse Huber has scored 10 goals, and Monica Polgar has totaled 83 to each lead the Summit League.

Up Next | The Leathernecks return home for Senior Day on Sunday (Oct. 27) versus Oral Roberts before the season finale at South Dakota on Sunday (Nov. 3).
